Identify who initiates the payment
With a pre-authorized debit (PAD), you authorise a biller to withdraw from your account. With a recurring payment that you schedule through your institution, you instruct the institution to send payments. FCAC explains this distinction in its PAD guide.
The difference matters when a date, amount or account changes. Start by identifying the arrangement rather than assuming every automatic payment can be changed in the same place.
Keep a payment map
| Detail | What to record |
|---|---|
| Payee and purpose | Who receives the payment and which bill or agreement it covers. |
| Method | Biller-initiated debit, scheduled bill payment or another arrangement. |
| Amount and timing | Fixed or variable amount, frequency and next expected date. |
| Change procedure | Who must receive a request, notice required and confirmation obtained. |
Include less frequent payments, not just monthly bills. An annual debit can easily be overlooked when changing an account.
Changing a payment method does not cancel the bill
FCAC explains that cancelling a PAD does not cancel the underlying contract or amount owed. Review the agreement’s cancellation instructions and arrange another accepted way to pay if an obligation continues. Keep the confirmation and check subsequent account activity.
If you only want to stop one payment, ask the institution about the available procedure, processing time and charges. A stop-payment request and cancellation of the agreement are different actions.
An illustrative account-change scenario
You open another account and tell your insurer new payment details. The next premium is due in five days. Until the insurer confirms the effective date, do not assume the upcoming debit will use the new account. Record the confirmation and check which account is charged.
For a voluntary provider change, use the switching checklist. For a connectFirst system conversion, use the official conversion topics linked in our member guide. These are different processes.
If a debit is incorrect or unrecognised
Contact the biller and institution promptly. FCAC describes time-sensitive reporting and reimbursement procedures; consult its current guide and your institution’s rules for the actual payment. Do not postpone reporting while attempting to resolve every detail yourself.
Prepare the date, amount, description and agreement that explain the discrepancy. Share those details through the provider’s official channels, not with this publication. The problem guide helps you organise the question.
